These dates are determined by the astrological positions of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter, and are considered the most auspicious for ritual bathing.
The Significance of Shahi Snan
The Shahi Snan is led by the revered saints and seers of the 13 Akharas (Hindu monastic orders). It is believed that taking a dip in the sacred waters immediately after the saints have bathed bestows the greatest spiritual merit. The ritual is said to cleanse one’s sins, leading to the attainment of moksha, or liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
The Grandeur of the Processions
The Shahi Snan is preceded by magnificent processions of the Akharas. Saints, adorned in vibrant attire and riding on decorated elephants, horses, and chariots, make their way to the bathing ghats amidst the chanting of hymns and the blowing of conch shells. The Naga Sadhus, the naked ascetics covered in ash, are a striking sight as they march with their swords and tridents.
